The world’s best pictures awarded today in Stockholm -Italian photographer Marco Vernaschi
wins premier award
The Italian photographer Marco Vernaschi took Picture of the Year when
the international photo competition, Photographers Giving Back Award
was judged. Vernaschi’s winning picture shows the chair on which the
President of Guinea-Bissau, João Bernardo, was executed just a few
hours previously.
“It’s a very different way of photographing a crime scene. You see no body,
which is simply makes the picture stronger. It’s a picture that asks many
questions,” ascertains Pieter Ten Hoopen, himself an award-winning
photographer and one of the members of the international jury.
Marco Vernaschi, born in Italy and living in Argentina, is one of the world’s most
successful photographers and has assignments for magazines such as
Newsweek, National Geographic and The Sunday Times Magazine.
”I am so happy! It is simply fantastic to be recognized in such a prestigious
contest. The winning picture is not the kind of picture you would define as a
beautiful image, but I guess it is quite effective and it takes a while before you
get what it is about,” Marco Vernaschi says.
The Photographers Giving Back Award is one of the world’s fastest growing photo
competitions. The Photographers Giving Back Award is a charity project
celebrating top photography from around the world and at the same time giving
back to the people who so often become the subject for photographers; exposed
and vulnerable people. This year, we were able to give back almost USD 5,000 to
a home for abused women in Eastern Congo. The money is being used to help
230 women to start a smallholding. They have bought rakes and sprinklers and
are now cultivating potatoes, carrots and tomatoes, says Jonas Lemberg, founder
of the project.
The winning pictures are published on the webb, in exhibition and in The PGB
Photo Book 2 that is released by book stores April 9.
The winning pictures can be downloaded from
www.thepgbphotoaward.com under the heading “press”, then “downloads”.
